A Memorial symposium for Dr. Kumao Toyoshima

A special symposium was held on Saturday,  Nov.19, 2022, honoring the memory of Dr. Kumao Toyoshima. Dr. Toyoshima passed away in March 2022 at the age of 91.

Dr. Toyoshima was the first in the world to prove the existence of cancer genes. His achievement established that cancer is caused by genes and led to the discovery of the src gene, the first oncogene to be identified. Dr. Bishop and Dr. Varmus, who identified the src gene, received the Nobel Prize for this achievement.
