Bioinformatic approaches for pathogen genomic surveillance
Dr. Tulio de Lima Campos
Head, Bioinformatics Core Facility, Aggeu Magalhães Institute, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz Pernambuco), Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil
■Abstract■
Pathogen genomic surveillance is a powerful tool for understanding pathogen diversity, tracking transmission, and detecting emerging threats to public health. This talk will explore key bioinformatics approaches for pathogen genomic surveillance, from sequence quality control, genome assembly and variant analysis to phylogenetics, genomic epidemiology, and metagenomics. It will also discuss the integration of genomic data with epidemiological information to support outbreak investigation and public health decision-making.

Translating mNGSResults into Clinical Practice
Dr. Kazuhiro Horiba
Lab Chief, Pathogen Genomics Center, National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), Japan Institute for Health Security (JIHS)
■Abstract■
The adoption of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has been advancing in infectious disease research, and its application as a diagnostic tool in clinical settings has increased in recent years. Clinical metagenomic NGS (mNGS) involves sequencing nucleic acids extracted from clinical specimens and analysing pathogen- and host-derived sequences within the resulting metagenomic data. As the mNGS workflow involves professionals from different fields and comprises multiple complex steps, it is challenging for individuals to fully understand and master the process. Therefore, a shared understanding of the key considerations and challenges at each stage is essential for its effective implementation. In this presentation, I will introduce our efforts to improve clinicians’ understanding of the mNGS workflow and its challenges, with the aim of facilitating the appropriate interpretation and clinical application of mNGS results.
