FAYA (D3)Department of Signal Transduction

Q1 Please tell us about your current role.

I am currently a second year PhD student. This April, I will be entering my third year.

Q2 What is the focus of your Research?

The focus of my research is endothelial stem cells and its application as a potential therapy to different diseases and conditions. The current focus is endothelial stem cells’ role in Gaucher Disease, a genetically inherited disease.

Q3 Why did you choose RIMD?

I chose RIMD because I have met some of the Alumni of RIMD, Osaka University and how they broaden my take on the medical field not just as clinician but also as a researcher and other roles that could be taken upon in medicine. Upon further information, I saw the achievements of the professors and students of RIMD then I decided that this is the place that could guide me to become not just a good researcher but an all-rounder professional.

Q4 Do you think RIMD is a good place to study science?

If you are interested or are currently in the medicine or bioscience field, yes. They have one of the best facilities and access to enable many kinds of experiments that would normally be difficult to do where I came from.

Q5 What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I like trying and finding out things that could work or not work on a specific case/condition. How a treatment can affect one thing in various ways. I enjoy the brainstorming sessions with my lab mates the most.

Q6 What do you do on a typical day?

I do experiments in the morning and afternoon and then data compiling and analysis after. When I have no upcoming experiments or data extraction, I read articles related to my research or study Japanese. By the end of the week, I prepare the data to present in our progress report.

Q7 What are the best and worst things about your life in Japan?

Best
Everywhere I look it is beautiful. Every season is beautiful. There are many things to do and explore from nature, food, culture, and communities. I met with a lot of people that I would never have met before from all over the world.

Worst
The food is expensive. Fruits, especially.

Q8 What advice would you give for those wanting to study at RIMD?

Be sure to do enough research before you decide to study at RIMD to know what you want to do, which lab most suitable for you and your future goal, and know what do you want to do next after you finish your study at RIMD and how RIMD can support that. Read the RIMD main webpage, ask around if you know someone who studied or worked at RIMD, read some of the published articles. All in all, enjoy your journey of your study and career.
